Making Sausage Bread – With a Flavorful Basil Sauce
Sausage bread is a savory snack that originated when Western-style bread culture was introduced. Pizza bread became popular in the 1980s as a way to enjoy pizza flavors in a bakery-friendly format. Both are hearty and satisfying options for any meal.
Hello there~ Today I baked some sausage bread at home!
My husband suddenly craved it, so I followed Hoya’s recipe and gave it my best 😊
🧂 Let’s start with the dry ingredients
- Bread flour 250g
- Sugar 25g
- Salt 5g
- Dry yeast 4g
- Butter 25g
Make sure the ingredients don’t touch each other directly, and mix them evenly.
Next, add 160ml of water and begin kneading.
I used the automatic kneading mode on my mixer. Once the dough comes together, add 25g of butter and knead again.
If you’re into home baking, I highly recommend using a mixer! It really lowers the chance of failure and saves your wrists.
⏱️ First proofing and dividing
Once the dough is ready, tidy it up and let it proof at room temperature for 1 hour.
After that, divide it into 8 portions of 60g each.
Shape each into a ball and let them rest for 15 minutes.
🧅 Toppings and basil sauce
While the dough is resting, let’s prepare the toppings.
I mixed onion, corn, mayonnaise, and sugar.
Now for the star of the show – the basil sauce!
- Water 25g
- Sugar 25g
- Honey 25g
- Mayonnaise 50g
- Basil pesto 50g
I microwaved the water, sugar, and honey mixture for 30 seconds to melt it.
Then I added the mayonnaise and basil pesto and mixed it well.
This sauce is super versatile – great on toast or sandwiches too!
🌭 Shaping and topping
Roll out the dough to match the length of the sausage.
Wrap the sausage tightly with the dough, leaving no gaps.
Then, cut the dough with scissors, but don’t cut all the way through – leave the bottom intact.
Spread the cut pieces to the left and right to shape them nicely.
Top generously with the prepared mixture, then add cheese, mayonnaise, and ketchup.
🔥 Final proofing and baking
Now it’s time for the final proofing.
Let the shaped dough rest for about 40 minutes at room temperature.
Preheat your oven, then bake at 180°C for 20 minutes.
Once baked, brush with basil sauce and enjoy! It’s absolutely delicious.
Sadly, I couldn’t film the sauce-brushing part due to a camera battery issue 😢
But I’ll be back with an even better video next time!
💌 Wrapping up
My husband loved this sausage bread so much,
I think I’ll be making it again soon.
Thanks to the basil sauce, the flavor was rich and satisfying.
I highly recommend trying it – it’s perfect as a meal or a snack.
Wishing you a wonderful day ☀️
